A 21-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Kodichikkanahalli on Sunday night.

The deceased, Pooja Shivaraj, a housewife, was married for about two years to Shivaraj, a private company employee, the police said.

According to the police, Pooja used her veil to hang herself from the ceiling fan. She left a death note accusing her husband and father-in-law of harassing and torturing her for dowry. The death note alleged that the husband and his father kept hounding Pooja, asking her to bring money from her house. Shivaraj's father Suresh is a KSRP constable. She had also sent messages to a few of her relatives stating that she was taking the extreme step unable to bear the harassment anymore.

The incident happened at around 10.30 pm on Sunday when Shivaraj, his father and other family members had gone to Chickpet to buy some household items.

After her relatives received the message, they rushed to the couple's house in Kodichikkanahalli only to find her hanging. They informed the police, broke open the door and shifted Pooja to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Her body was then shifted to St John's Hospital for postmortem. The Bommanahalli police have registered a case of dowry death and have booked the victim's husband and his father. Shivaraj has been arrested, produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

Efforts are on to arrest the father-in-law too who complained of health problems.
