P Harishekaran took charge as the 12th IGP (Western range) in Mangaluru on Friday.

The range comprises Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru district police units.

Speaking to reporters after taking charge, Harishekaran said that he believes in team spirit and will work in coordination of all his officers.

“I need a few days to study the demograpy and topography of the range before making any concrete plans to enhance law and order in the region,” he said.

While working in the internal security division, he said he has had a vast experience in coastal districts. “The exposure I gained from the region will definitely help to work here.”

Harishekaran, a 1996 batch IPS officer, replaces J Arun Chakravarthy, who has been posted as the IGP (Internal Security), Bengaluru. He is a native of Tamil Nadu and started his career as a probationary officer in Vijayapura. Later, he served as SP of Chamarajanagar in charge of Veerappan operation, SP of Raichuru and Tumakuru.

He has worked in different positions and he served as the Additional Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, before coming Mangaluru.
