Raonic enters quarters; Kerber shocked

Defending champion and top seed Milos Raonic cruised into the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International with a regulation 6-3, 6-2 win over Argentine Diego Schwartzman on Thursday.

Raonic will now take on Rafael Nadal for a place in the semifinals after the Spaniard crushed Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-1, 6-1. The women’s competition lost its top two seeds when Angelique Kerber and Dominika Cibulkova were both bundled out in the quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Kerber went down to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while Frenchwoman Alize Cornet eliminated Cibulkova 6-3, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Unseeded German Julia Goerges burst into the WTA Auckland Classic limelight on Thursday with a dramatic come-from-behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win to oust Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals.

Murray struggles

World No 1 Andy Murray registered a battling 7-6 (8/6), 7-5 win over Austria's Gerald Melzer to reach the Qatar Open quarterfinals. He was joined in the last-eight by second seed Novak Djokovic who eased past Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4.

Hradecka scores

Czech veteran Lucie Hradecka scored 6-4, 6-4 win over 65th-ranked Lara Arruabarrena in Hopman Cup on Thursday. In the men's singles, Feliciano Lopez levelled the tie with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 win over Adam Pavlasek. Spain then claimed the victory with a 4-2, 4-1 win in the Fast Four mixed doubles rubber.
