Former Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde called upon youth to imbibe virtues of contentment and humanity to develop a better India.

Speaking at the World Heart Convention-2016 at Rajangana on Sunday, the former Lokayukta said that there is need for self-retrospection. He added that people are born as Homo Sapiens – it is only when these species acquire, exhibit and develop humanity that they become humans.

Lamenting on the deteriorating values in society, the former Lokayukta added that the big question is how to handle the falling values. Stating that society only respects money and power, he lamented that corruption has massively affected all the statutes of democracy.

The Legislature and Executive are already maligned. The only hope with the Judiciary is also slowly diminishing, owing to the delay in disposal of cases. The probabilities remain with the underworld, which would take over the Judiciary eventually. India is a country governed by multiple culture and tradition. Issues like Kashmir and the problems prevailing in the north-eastern states, if not handled properly, will make way for external forces indulging in dividing the country, he said with apprehension.

He added he has lost all hopes of change from his generation as they were the ones who led the country to the deterioration condition. The hope lies in youths, who can be the crusaders of change. He had travelled across 950 colleges and schools imploring upon the students to change the present society and build a society with values.

The former Lokayukta also called the government today as being ‘of some, by some and for some’. Walkouts and adjournments in the Parliament have become day-to-day phenomena. According to a report, Rs 10 crore is spent on one-day proceedings at the Lok Sabha. He said the government which was constituted to serve the people, today has become the cause for people sufferings. The only outcome after 70 years of Independence is that the purpose on which the Constitution of India was built is not served.

The biggest irony is that political parties are playing the cards as per their convenience. For instance, the Opposition party NDA in 2012 opposed the UPA government’s move to introduce GST Bill. Now, the UPA government is against the introduction of GST Bill by the NDA government, he pointed at the reversal of roles.
