Anti-demonetisation strike gets poor response in Mandya

Last Updated 28 November 2016, 18:32 IST

While the workers of the Congress party and the Communist Party of India observed the day as ‘Aakrosh Diwas’, staging protests against the demonetisation of high denomination notes, BJP workers distributed sweets, tea and ‘biriyani’ to the public, celebrating ‘Sambrama Diwas’ across the district on Monday.

Congress leaders and party workers formed a human chain at Sanjay Circle in the city, highlighting the problems faced by a common man due to the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination notes on Monday.

The agitating Congmen took out a protest march to the deputy commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee through the deputy commissioner and sought the President’s intervention to address the cash crisis across the country. They criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not planning demonetisation well in advance.

They claimed that the transactions have been affected and the weddings that had been scheduled in advance are the worst affected. Even after 20 days of demonetisation, the issue is yet to come under control, they complained.

Former MP and actor Ramya alleged that the BJP leaders knew about demonetisation in advance. “The public respected the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). But the BJP’s move has tarnished its image. The leaders are not able to understand the problems faced by the people,” she said.

Congress leaders M S Atmananda and Anjana Srikanth participated in the protest. The members of the Communist Party of India too staged a protest. However, schools, colleges, government offices, petrol bunks, banks and bus services were not affected.

Distribution of biryani

Meanwhile, BJP observed the day by distributing sweets and tea to the people in the city on Monday. In Maddur, Belli Biriyani Hotel, owned by Shankar and brothers, distributed ‘biriyani’ to around 200 members.
