A senior police officer said, “The High Grounds police, on night patrol, found the vehicle abandoned on I Cross.”
Police recovered Rs 45 lakh that had remained in the van.
Driver Dominic Roy, employed by a cash logistics company, fled from K G Road when his colleagues were inside a Bank of India branch, according to a complaint.
Later on Wednesday, the Upparpet police rushed to Vasanth Nagar and confirmed it was the same van Roy had driven away, taking with him Rs 1.37 crore, mostly in new Rs 2,000 notes.
When police, assisted by staff from the logistics and security companies, opened the van, they found Rs 45 lakh in cash and a single barrel breech (SBB) gun with three rounds of live cartridges.
“Roy’s wife and son are missing. We are trying to find out if they have fled with him or are hiding,” the police officer said.
The driver’s parents and relatives were questioned. They had no idea about the heist, police said.
Roy’s wife Elwyn had gone home on Wednesday evening. It is possible Roy picked up his wife and son and went to Vasanth Nagar, where he abandoned the vehicle and fled with two cash boxes, police said.
The driver left the third box untouched as it was under a seat, he presumably did not notice it.
