Farmers' protest: Leaders warn of aggressive agitation

Say deputy commissioner has not turned up to hear their woes

Ravikumar Punacha, president of Dakshina Kannada unit of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, on Thursday warned that an aggressive agitation would be launched if the state government continued to neglect the interests of the agrarian community.

Punacha, who is leading the four-day overnight protest of like-minded organisations that was launched on November 21 in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here, said, “The farmers will be announcing their next move, as Raitha Sangha state unit president and Melukote MLA K S Puttanaiah is expected to table the issue during the ongoing special Legislative Assembly session at Belagavi on Friday. Puttanaiah was scheduled to table the issue on Thursday, but it has been postponed to Friday.”

Referring to the recent announcement made by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that a decision waiving farmers’ loans would be taken only if the Centre takes a step in this regard, Punacha termed the stand ‘immature.’

Even though Dakshina Kannada district is not reeling under drought, there are many issues plaguing the farmers. The district has received only 40% rains, which is lesser than the annual prediction. The yields from crops have been poor. Despite this, the legislators from the region have failed to bring such issues to the notice of the chief minister, rued Punacha.

Sugath Jain, a trade union leader, warned of turning the heat on the legislators if they continued to turn a blind eye toward farmers. Such is the situation that even the deputy commissioner has not turned up to hear our demands, he added.
