Farmers invoke Mallya for loan waiver

Last Updated 23 November 2016, 17:29 IST

Farmer woman Sunandamma and her son P K Sudhakar have written to the State Bank of India, Shivapura branch, in the taluk, seeking waiver of their farm loans as done for liquor baron Vijay Mallya.

The mother-son duo had availed of the loans from the bank two years ago. They had borrowed Rs 40,000 initially and had applied for a loan of Rs 3.35 lakh for construction of a building to take up sericulture. The bank had rejected their application. But, later sanctioned Rs 4.90 lakh for the purchase of tractor.

“As the sericulture loan was rejected, the silk farming had to be stopped. Now, the loan amount has increased to Rs 7 lakh, including interest, making it impossible for us to repay,” said Sudhakar.

Sunandamma and Sudhakar, who learnt about the loan waiver for Vijay Mallya recently, submitted a requisition, seeking waiver of their loans.
