MLC M P Sunil Subramani on Thursday described Kanakadasa as a great personality who had tried to create social awareness through the renditions of his keerthanas.

The MLC was addressing the gathering during Kanakadasa Jayanti programme organised jointly by district administration, Zilla Panchayat and Kannada and Culture Department at Kote old auditorium.

“Kanakadasa contributed enormously to Kannada literary world with his writings and keerthanas, which still hold relevance,” said Subramani.

Siddaraju Bellaiah, lecturer from Madhe Mahadeshwara PU College, asked the people to imbibe the generosity of Kanakadasa by shedding their egos.

The 16th century is considered a golden period of ‘Dasa Sahitya’. Works of saints Purandaradasa and Kanakadasa reached even the common man, creating awareness on the significance of education. It is also the reason for Vachana Sahitya and Dasa Sahitya to be considered as significant parts of the Kannada literary world.

Madikeri City Municipal Council president Kaveramma Somanna said, “Haridasa tradition has a history of 500 years in the state, with both Kanakadasa and Purandaradasa striving for eradication of inequality in the society.”
