Rathayatra against Yettinahole project

The Nethravathi Samrakshana Samyukta Samiti, under the leadership of MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, will take out a Rathayatra from December 3 to 5 to urge the government to drop the Yettinahole project.

The MP, addressing a preparatory meeting on Monday, said that the yatra, ‘Pancha theertha - Sapta Kshetra’, will start at Subrahmanya temple. Water from River Kumaradhara will be placed in a Kalasha, which, in turn, will be placed on a chariot. Sullia MLA S Angara will flag off the yatra in the presence of Subrahmanya Mutt seer at 10 am on December 3.

The yatra will cover all the Assembly constituencies of the district. The ratha will move to Uppinangady Sahasralingeshwara Temple, Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple, Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple, Pavanje Jnanashakti Subrahmanya Temple, Bappanadu Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple and culminate at Kadri Sri Manjunatha Temple. While visiting these temples, the water from Sangama Kshetra, Nethravathi, Phalguni, Shambhavi and Nandini rivers will be added to the Kalasha, along with offering prayers. The rathayatra’s main objective is to protect the natural resources – rivers and land – of Tulunadu, said Kateel.

Processions and public programmes and will be held at Subrahmanya, Nelyadi, Kokkada, Ujire, Kalladka, B C Road, Farangipete, Surathkal, Mulki and Kadri. The concluding ceremony will be held at Kadri at 8.30 am on December 5. The procession will include band set and procession vehicle. Leaders from all religions will be invited to the yatra and the local leaders will be part of the same – 4,500-5000 people are expected to take part in Subrahmanya and Dharmasthala and around 1,000 people in other places. During the pooja, the public can offer flowers to the kalasha, instead of offering garlands to the leaders.

Former MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty and VHP leader M B Puranik will be the honorary presidents of the Rathayatra committee. Buntara Yane Nadavara Matru Sangha president Ajit Kumar Rai Maladi and BJP district unit president Sanjiv Mathandoor will be the presidents. Gopalakrishna Herala, former deputy mayor Purushottam Chitrapur former MLC Monappa Bhandary will be the conveners, Dinaker Shetty, Raghuveer, Satyajit Suratkal, Shashiraj Shetty Kolabe will be co-conveners, Niranjan Rai, Nagaraj Shetty, Yogish Bhat, Krishna J Palemar, Anwar Manippadi, Fr William, Harikrishna Bantwal, Rajesh Naik Uleppadi, Sharan Pumpwell and others will be vice presidents, former secretary to the Government of India V V Bhat and irrigation expert S G Mayya will provide guidance to the Rathayatra committee. Preparations for the Rathayatra will start on Wednesday.

Vijay Kumar Shetty said that former Chief Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda and M Veerappa Moily are mainly responsible for an unscientific project like Yettinahole. They should not be allowed to enter the district, he demanded, and added that this protest is essential for the welfare of the district. He lamented over the non-support of some elected representatives in the districts for anti-Yettinahole protests.

Activist M G Hegade clarified that the Rathayatra is not a movement initiated by a political party. Leaders from all parties are welcome to take part.
