Last Updated 23 October 2016, 18:39 IST

MLC M K Pranesh on Saturday said schools and colleges have turned into factories producing graduates.

He was addressing a gathering during a guidance programme for youth titled ‘Nanna Elgege Naane Shilpi’ (I am the sculptor of my growth), organised as part of ‘Zilla Yuva Shathamanotsava 2016-17’ jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, department of Youth Empowerment and Sports. Pranesh said the educational institutions have failed to impart education that help students shape their lives.

The MLC said that about 1.5 crore students graduate out of colleges annually. It is becoming increasingly difficult to guarantee jobs for them. Engineering graduates continue to outnumber the demand, while the private companies have been capitalising their energy to achieve their requirements. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced several schemes to enable creation of job opportunities paritcularly for youth. The youngsters should make judicious use of the opportunity. The famous call of Swami Vivekananda, ‘I am the sculptor of my growth’ should inspire youth.

Trainer R K Balachandra stressed on reforms in the field of education that could help students face hurdles in life and cement bonds with  others. He blamed parents for diminishing creativity among their wards, for most of the parents coerce their children to compete with their peers in academics. There is a lack of guidance for students that has created a situation where people are unable to understand the concept of education in life. While the educated are finding their salaries too meagre to meet increasing demands in life, unemployment remains to be addressed.

Assistant director of department of Youth Empowerment and Sports Dr Manjula said guidance programme for youth is a platform for the community to unveil their hidden talent.
As many as 18 contests have been organised and the winners stand chance to showcase their talent in national level. It will also help them develop organisational skills.

The inaugural session was followed by cultural programmes including folk dance and staging of play.
