A 36-year-old man who cheated over 30 divorcees and widows of money was arrested on Monday.

Manish Gupta created a fake profile on matrimonial websites, where he posed as a single man who ran a business which gave him a turnover of Rs 1 crore per annum, said the police.

He extorted Rs 75, 000 from one of them and investigation is underway to find out what happened with the others.

The woman who filed the complaint in Ashok Vihar police station, made thorough enquiries and found that he was married, has two children and that his online profile was fake. She made the complaint on October 9.

She told the police that she met him at the beginning of the year when Gupta had emailed her his profile.

He gave her false hopes of marriage and dated her for a while, so as to take her into confidence.

According to the complaint, Gupta called up the woman in June and told her that he lost his wallet, credit card and a diamond ring and urgently required some money.

The police said that the woman, assuming that she was helping her future husband, deposited an amount of Rs 50,000 in his Axis bank account and transferred an extra Rs 25,000.

After this transaction, he began responding to her lesser and soon all communication stopped, the woman told police.

Gupta had posted his profile on matrimonial websites like Bharatmatrimony.com, Jeevansaathi.com and Simplymarry.com.

The profile said that he has done his MBA from Symbiosis, Pune and is a graduate from Kirori Mal College in Delhi University, said police.

Although the address mentioned in his bio-data was wrong, his mother and brother were traced. They told the police that they have not seen him for the past 10 years.
Gupta was nabbed in Ashok Vihar on Sunday.

Gupta dropped out of college after his second year. He moved away from his brothers, sold his share of property, and started indulging in such activities, the police said.
