Saffron leaders push for Ram temple

The NDA government’s decision to set up a Ramayana museum and the Uttar Pradesh government’s clearance to the Ramlila theme  park in Ayodhya has triggered a demand from the saffron leaders for the construction of Ram temple ahead of the state Assembly elections.

BJP leader and founder of the Bajarang Dal (BD) Vinay Katiyar left his party’s top leadership red-faced, when he virtually termed the proposed Ramayana museum as nothing but a lollipop and said that the nation wants nothing less than a grand Ram temple.

“All these (museum, theme park) are alright but what we want is a Ram temple...without the Ram temple everything else is useless,”Katiyar, who is among the prominent BJP leaders, who spearheaded the Ram temple movement, said here on Tuesday.

Virtually ridiculing the proposed museum, Katiyar said that there is no point in setting up such a thing about 15-20 km  away from Ayodhya.

“There are thousands of temples in Ayodhya and Ramayana is recited everywhere...a museum is not a big thing,”he remarked. Katiyar’s remarks came on a day when Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma visited Ayodhya to inspect the site for the proposed museum.

A few days back, BJP leader  Subramanian Swamy strongly advocated for a Ram temple and said that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had lost the polls as he had abandoned the temple issue.

BJP MP Yogi Adityanath, Sakshi Maharaj and some others have also been clamoring for a Ram temple in Ayodhya.  The Samajwadi Party (SP) government in the state had on Monday also approved the construction of a Ramlila theme park in the temple town.
