'Need for strict implementation of law against female foeticide'

A study done in collaboration with the European Union recommended stricter implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act to curb female foeticide.

The study identified the issue of ‘missing girls’ in Indian population as the major concern. 

It also suggested changes in socio-cultural behaviour for the inclusion of ‘missing girls’ in the Indian population. 

The study conducted by Plan India, a part of the US-based NGO Plan International, presented a bleak scenario of achieving sustainable development goals of United Nations in 2030 as far as gender equality is concerned. The study was funded by the EU.

The study recommended that the implementation of PCPNDT should be done “through well-defined planning, strategy and monitoring mechanisms at district level with greater awareness of various government schemes and laws”.

 The recommendation is significant in the wake of the recent suggestion of holding parents responsible for sex-selective abortions.

The idea was met with great resistance as it was thought to be in favour of doctors and clinics involved in sex determination during pregnancy and consequent female foeticide.
