Nithyashree races to fourth gold

Bengaluru Urban’s Nithyashree clinched a fine double in athletics to hog the limelight on day two of the Dasara Games here at the Chamundi Vihar Stadium on Monday.

Nithyashree, along with Prajna Prakash, Apsana Begam and Reena George, bagged the gold for Bengaluru Urban in the 4x100M relay in 47 seconds. Nithyashree also topped in the women’s 400 metres (56.40). The Bengaluru girl, with her twin victories on Monday, took her total gold medal tally to four.

In the men’s 1500 metres, Bengaluru Urban’s KA Bharath clocked 3:58.00 to emerge winner, creating a new meet record. Bharath surpassed the record of 4:01.5 set by M D Manjunath of Mysuru in 2009.

In men’s swimming, Mysuru’s Hemanth J produced a fine performance to nail two gold medals. At the Mysuru University Swimming Centre, Hemanth won the 200M backstroke in 2.22.71. The Mysuru boy emerged winner in the 200M individual medley in a time of 2.19.40.
