Girls to don cop's cap, will manage traffic

In a first of its kind campaign, teenage girls would be manning the traffic in the national capital on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child.

The Delhi Traffic Police was approached by an NGO last week, with a proposal to allow girls, between the age of 16-18 years, to take over the traffic management in some parts of the city with a view to empower them.

The exercise will be held on October 11, which besides being the International Day of the Girl Child, is also the occasion of Dussehra. An initiative of NGO Plan India, which has been working on the rights of girls and women and promoting gender equality, the idea behind the programme is to empower the girls to take over such roles and learn from these experiences.
Around 100 girls would be involved in the exercise of creating traffic awareness which will extend to ‘high-profile’ areas like Connaught Place and Mandi House. They will be assisted by traffic police personnel, most of them women.

“Girls have different roles in lives which might or might not be associated with power. So we want to give them a chance to take over the role and learn from the experience,” said an official of Plan India.

Rehearsal session

The Delhi Traffic Police will be conducting a rehearsal session with the girls a day before the event.

“We will be giving them a one day training on October 10 and explain them the traffic rules and how to spread traffic awareness. It is a good initiative and we are supporting the spirit in which they are organising this,” said Garima Bhatnagar, Joint CP, Traffic Police.

Not only traffic, these girls will be taking over important roles even in corporate houses, media publications, police department, radio stations, etc, across on the country for a day.

“Since not all activities can be done on October 11, some of these are planned on October 10, as a build up to the International Girls’ Day,” the Plan official said.
