A 30-year-old woman committed suicide at her in-laws home in South Delhi’s Chhattarpur Enclave on Tuesday. An SDM statement was recorded in the matter and the husband was arrested, said police.

The woman’s parents alleged that she was being forced to take a loan, which bogged her down. She committed suicide because she was depressed. Bharti Sharma was married to Tarun, 31 on February 24. She was working in Jet Airways as a customer service agent at Indira Gandhi International airport.

Bharti was found hanging in her room by her husband on Tuesday evening. Police said that there was no suicide note found in the house. The room was locked from inside. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.

Bharti’s father, Narendra Sharma and her mother, Asha alleged that Bharti’s husband and in-laws are responsible for her death. According to her father, just after Bharti and Tarun got married, Tarun told her that he had take a debt of Rs five lakh and she should help to repay it.

Once Bharti told her in-laws and husband that she wouldn’t take any loan to repay the debt, they tortured and killed her, said Narendra. Tarun works with a travel agency as a customer care officer. He met Bharti at the airport when he also used to work there. He proposed to her and their marriage was arranged.

Narendra said that her in-laws pressurised her every day to take the loan and also emotionally abused her by saying things like she should rather die if she can’t help them.

“In the beginning she informed us about it. But Tarun kept going back and forth saying that he will take care of the debt and at times say that he couldn’t. Richa, one of Bharti’s colleagues said that she used to be a happy-go-lucky girl before marriage but soon after she became quiet.

Bharti did not tell her parents or friends about what she was feeling, except mention about a “financial crisis” at home. Her father said that Tarun would often threaten her and torture her verbally.

“Once when I got cold and cough, he told her that I had a heart attack,” the father said. Though the husband is arrested, Bharti’s family wants that her mother-in- law also to be arrested.
