A II PUC student died on the spot while his female friend escaped unhurt in a horrific collision between a motorbike and school van that left the two-wheeler gutted. The accident occurred near Tataguni Estate on Kanakapura Road, south Bengaluru, around 4.45 pm on Thursday.

Venkatesh, 18, a resident of JP Nagar and a student at Vijaya College, was riding the two-wheeler while his female friend was on the pillion. Venkatesh, said to be speeding, lost control over the motorbike while trying to overtake a vehicle. The motorbike went on to crash into an oncoming school van. Venkatesh and the girl fell down. Venkatesh came under the van’s wheel and died of massive head injuries. The girl  escaped unhurt. Neither
Venkatesh nor the girl was wearing helmet, police said.

The motorbike’s fuel tank leaked as it was dragged some distance away. The two-wheeler then got stuck in the van’s rear wheels and caught fire. A part of the van was also engulfed in flames.

The van driver put the brakes on and evacuated the schoolchildren. The motorbike was charred while the van was partially burnt. The police and firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Alternative arrangements were made to send the children back home.

The police have booked the van driver under IPC section 304A (causing death by negligence) and seized his vehicle.
