Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty said a person like Lord Sri Krishna should take birth again to help women as the number of harassment cases is increasing.

At the Sri Krishna Jayanthi programme organised by the district administration in association with Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Kannada and Culture Department at Town Hall here on Thursday, she hailed Krishna as a protector of women.
Before that, she said, “If Krishna is popularly known as the husband of 16,000 wives, one should also look beyond, for he was also the protector of those women.”

The MLA also choose to interpret many pranks related to Krishna in mythology, saying that they had  many meanings to convey to the society. If Krishna stole butter, it was due to his love for the country. If he also stole women’s clothes when they went to bathe in water, it was to teach them a lesson of discipline, she said.

Elaborating, she asserted, “The butter Krishna stole was sent to the  people in Mathura for their fitness to take on tyrannic ruler Kamsa. So also the clothes were stolen to show women a dedicated place to bath, instead of finding themselves in an embarrassing situation, outside.”

Even the power-hungry politicians have a lot to learn from Krishna’s generous behaviour. Krishna installed Ugrasena as the king of Mathura after defeating Kamsa, while at Dwaraka he anointed his brother Balarama as the ruler. Yudhishtira ascended the throne at the insistence of Krishna, after Pandavas defeated Kauravas in the decisive battle, she recalled.

Former chairman of Karnataka Yakshagana and Bayalata Akademi Kumble Sundar Rao said, “Krishna, though belongs to Yadava sect, is worshipped by people irrespective of caste. However, it is still difficult to understand him completely as he assumed many forms from human to divine.”

Holiday

Mangaluru North MLA Moiddin Bava said, “A general holiday should be declared for Krishna Janmashthami and efforts will be made in this regard.”Empty chairsTaking cognisance of empty seats outnumbering the gathering, Rao also regretted about the dearth of audience for the government-sponsored Krishna Janmashthami programme. “There is a set belief among the people about government programmes. Instead, people should treat such events as close to their heart.”

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kumar who spoke earlier also echoed Rao’s feelings.
“Be it Krishna Janmashthami or any other programmes, people stay away from attending the programmes. Strangely, people like to spend three hours watching cinema, but blatantly ignore such programmes that may help derive valuable thoughts and messages for life.”

Earlier, in a sarcastic tone MLA Shakuntala Shetty said, “Had it been a gala event with all sound and noise, the people would have come.”
