Now, RO-purified water for Rs 5 a litre at City rly station

Rail passengers will get purified water at Re 1 for 300 ML and Rs 25 for five litres from water-vending machines at Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna railway station in the city from Monday. 

N S Sridhar Murthy, senior commercial manager, Bengaluru division, South Western Railway, told DH that 10 water-vending machines, installed at the KSR railway station, will start functioning on Monday.

Explaining the need for providing safe drinking water to rail commuters, Murthy said those who travel in unreserved coaches are most vulnerable to water-borne diseases. Keeping them in mind, the “water points” have been installed at the end of the platforms where the unreserved coaches halt.

A total of 56 ‘water points’ will be installed at several railway stations under the Bengaluru division in a month, he added. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has installed these water-vending machines at the KSR railway station.

A passenger can buy a minimum of 300 ml and maximum of 5 litres water, purified through reverse osmosis, at the water-vending machines. The prices will be less if they take water in their own containers.

Presently, railway stations are offering corporation water through taps installed at multiple points on their premises. But, these are being used as wash basins. water-vending machine will purify water by reverse osmosis method, UV sterilised and several stages of the filtration process.

They even have a screen which displays cost and quality of water to the commuters.
