Chinese teenager Ren Qian claimed the gold medal in the women's individual 10 metre platform event on Thursday, giving her country a clean sweep of the champion titles in the sport's women events.

Fifteen-year-old Ren, the first Chinese Olympic champion to be born after 2000, achieved the highest-scored dive of the evening at 94.05 points, which gave her a total of 439.25 points.

Her team-mate, 17-year-old Si Yajie, took second place with a score of 419.40 while Canada's Meaghan Benfeito won the bronze with 389.20 points.

Cerutti, Schmidt triumph

Brazil took beach volleyball gold in front of a raucous home crowd that refused to be quietened by the driving rain, as Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt defeated Italy 2-0.

In both sets, the Brazilians fought back after Italy's Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo took early leads, but the power of Cerutti at the net ultimately took the match 21-19, 21-17.

The Netherlands beat Russia earlier to take bronze.

Sailing win for hosts

Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze won Brazil's first 2016 sailing gold in the women's 49erFX class, coming from behind to score a dramatic medal-race victory over New Zealand's Alex Maloney and Molly Meech.

Serbia stun US

In volleyball, the Serbian women's team eliminated the world's top-ranked team, the United States, in a shock upset after the undefeated Americans lost their top player to a leg injury.

Serbia, competing for Olympic medals for the first time, will face China, who are playing for their third gold after overcoming the Netherlands in four sets.

The Serbians were riding high after sending Russia home two days earlier and defeated the US 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, 15-13 in a five-set clash that could have gone either way.

The US team won the first set but Serbia, driven on by their formidable spiker Brankica Mihajlovic, took control after America's top-scoring middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo went off with a left knee injury sustained in the opening set.

Russia win

In synchronised swimming, Russia won the team gold for the fifth straight Olympics, completing a double launched with their duet title.

The victory kept Russia's stranglehold on Olympic gold in a sport in which they have won every title since the Sydney 2000 Games.

China achieved 192.9841 for silver and Japan, returning to the podium for the first time since 2004, took bronze with 189.2056.

Bronze for Canada

Seventeen-year old Deanne Rose turned in a star performance to help Canada beat Brazil 2-1 and ensure the North Americans' second consecutive bronze medal in the women's football.

Rose got the opening goal for Canada after 25 minutes when she was on hand to side-foot home a low cross from Ashley Lawrence, after the defender had run half the length of the field on a quick counter-attack. She then turned goal-maker seven minutes into the second half, when she crossed for Christine Sinclair to make it 2-0 from close in.
