BBMP to clear rajakaluve encroachments, publicise survey sketches

Last Updated 30 July 2016, 21:07 IST

Learning the hard way in the aftermath of flooding, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBM) has not only decided to clear structures blocking stormwater drains and rajakaluves, it will also put up all the survey sketches of rajakaluves in the public domain.

The Survey and Settlement Department which started surveying rajakaluves in the city following the high court order in 2011, has not completed the task yet. From the existing survey report, there are 1,900-odd encroachments, of which only 800 have been removed. Sources say the width of the stormwater drains has been compromised on and the surveyors have connived with realtors to ignore encroachments at many places.

BBMP will start the demolition drive once it gets the survey sketches, which may reach the BBMP by August 15. Along with it, the Palike will upload all the survey sketches in the public domain.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said, “There are complaints of discrepancies in survey sketches. We will put them up in the public domain where we will invite reviews from the public too.”

Prasad said a lot of online initiatives will be launched on August 15. More such measures to bring in transparency are in the offing and putting up survey sketches on the public domain is part of the initiative, he said. During the visit to Madiwala, HSR Layout, Kodichikkanahalli, Kasavanahalli and other flood affected areas, there was an outcry from people to clear encroachments of stormwater drains for the safety and security of the citizens.
