The National Gallery of Modern Art is hosting an exhibition of 131 lithographs by Raja Ravi Varma.  Art collector Ganesh V Shivaswamy has curated the collection and sourced most of the paintings from his private collection.

The exhibition seeks to highlight Ravi Verma's lithographic paintings which have found a place in many homes. It was Ravi Verma's effort to have his paintings reproduced through lithography that made him a household name in South India.

For fans of Ravi Varma, the exhibition gives a chance to see some of his rare paintings such as Sita Swyamvar, where the future wife of Rama is shown as a child. There are also several popular paintings here, from standing Lakshmi to sitting Saraswathi, which have immortalised the artist.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to pick up trivia on Ravi Verma and get an insight into his work. The master artist painted his Lakshmi in a simple saree to avoid showing her sporting an attire specific to any region.

Shivaswamy started collecting Ravi Varma’s paintings at the tender age of 13, when he accidentally came across the painting of Saraswati. He has also travelled extensively to different parts of the country to build his collection.
