The Athletics Federation of India has decided to conduct two Indian Grand Prix meets at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on July 10 and 11 to allow the athletes one last chance to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games.

The deadline for meeting the qualifying standard ends on July 11 and a few Indian athletes are still in with a chance to join the bunch that has already made the cut. The athletes who are currently competing in Thailand, Belgium and Kazakhstan are expected to arrive for the two meets. The men’s 4x400 relay team is in with a realistic chance of making it, needing to move up by a notch from their current 17th position before the deadline ends.

With the rules stipulating the participation of at least two national teams in the contest for the relay timings to be valid, the AFI is set to rope in the services of Sri Lanka again. The Sri Lankans had competed in both men’s and women’s 4x400 relays at the Inter-State meet in Hyderabad, finishing fourth.

The Karnataka Athletics Association will organise the meet, having roped in Sriram Properties-Bangalore Marathon to back the event.
