Bounty time for dams as rain intensifies

Several parts of the state received bountiful rain on Monday, pushing up water levels in the dams. In fact, the Tunga dam has already reached the brim.

Incessant rains continued to lash Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts.

In the last 24 hours, Dakshina Kannada received 88.7 mm rainfall. The low-lying areas in and around Mangaluru were inundated. A few houses have been damaged across the district.

The Meteorological department has warned fishermen not to venture into the sea in the next 24 hours.

Sea erosion has intensified at Malpe, Udyavara, Padukere, Vadabhandeshwara, Ucchila and Bada. A compound wall and connecting road were damaged following sea erosion at Malpe.

Mudigere and Kalasa in Chikkamagaluru district received heavy rain, throwing normal life out of gear. The Hemavathi river is in spate in the district. The water level in the river at Bankenahalli, Mugrahalli has increased drastically.

Kodagu district also received good rainfall. Water has started flowing on Bhagamandala-Ayyangeri road. The water level in River Cauvery has increased. The level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2,844.34 feet. The inflow of water was 694 cusecs.

Incessant rains battered Dharwad and surrouding places on Monday. The district authorities stated that Dharwad city has received 50 mm rainfall in the last three days.
Belagavi city and surrounding villages continued to receive showers on Monday. Khanapur town and villages on the western side of the taluk received heavy downpour.

It drizzled in Bailhongal town, while Kittur received showers for about half-an-hour. The rest of the Bailhongal taluk witnessed overcast conditions.

Nippani town in Chikodi taluk received heavy showers for about an hour. It drizzled in Ramdurg town in the early hours of the day.

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Shivamogga district, throwing life out of gear. Most parts of the district witnessed incessant rains since morning, causing problems for students and the working people to reach their destinations in time.

Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Shikaripur, Sagar, Hosanagar and Thirthahalli received heavy rain throughout the day.

The water level in Linganamakki dam in Sagar taluk rose to 1,767.20 feet against the maximum level of 1,819 feet as the catchment area received good rainfall.

The inflow into the dam was 26,424 cusecs. Tunga dam has reached its maximum level of 5,88.24 feet.

As many as 24,808 cusecs of water was released from the dam. The water level in Mani dam in Hosanagar taluk rose to 576.15 feet against the maximum level of 594.36 feet. The inflow was 4,445 cusecs.

The Tungabhadra dam near Hosapete, Ballari district, received more than seven tmc feet of water in the last three days.

On Monday, the inflow was 31,617 cusecs and outflow 160 cusecs. The inflow is likely to increase as the catchment area in Shivamogga district is receiving good rainfall.

The water storage was 10.252 tmc feet, up from 3.846 tmc feet on Friday. The maximum storage is 133 tmc feet (silt forming 33 tmc feet). The increase in inflow is also due to the outflow from the Tunga dam. With rains receding in catchment areas, the inflow into Krishnaraja Sagar dam (KRS) came down to 10,918 cusecs on Monday. The dam had 86.35 feet of water as on July 4.

The Uttara Kannada district received moderate rainfall. Majali in the district faces the danger of sea erosion.
