Low-lying areas in danger of submersion

Boulders placed along Udupi sea coast to fight erosion

As the district received heavy rains on Wednesday, most of the low-lying areas in Kundapur have submerged.

The district received 93.6 mm rainfall for the last 24 hours. Kundapur taluk received the highest 117.6 mm rainfall, Udupi taluk received 63.5 mm, and Karkala taluk received 99.6 mm rainfall. Some of the areas in the district have undergone the brunt of sea erosion menace. The rivers in the district are flowing almost in, but not crossed, the danger-level.

Udupi Tahsildar Guruprasad told Deccan Herald that precautionary measures have been taken to shift the inhabitants in low lying areas and along the sea coast, during the emergencies. “The situation is under control. The rainfall is heavy, however, it is not constant. There is a break in between the showers, which has ensured the safety and there seems no immediate threat,” he said and added that sea erosion has been experienced in Udyavara, Padukere and Kodibengre.

“Measures to put boulders have been taken. The concrete road in Padukere is under threat. The boulders are also put against the sea,” he added.

He said a house in Korangrapadi was damaged. “The schools and temples are being readied as temporary shelters and rehabilitation centres in case of emergencies. The low-lying areas are out of danger, as the water in the submerged areas is being cleared,” explained the official.

He has visited the spot on Wednesday. A house in Kalmadi, belonging to Sanjeeva Poojary, is completely damaged and the loss is estimated to be Rs 80,000.

Sea erosion

Kundapur taluk experienced heavy rain and the villages in and around Nada are massively affected. The sea erosion menace has intensified in Maravanthe.

A source from the Kundapur taluk office said that nearly eight to 10 houses are partially damaged. The house of Bombala Koraga in Shankaranarayana is partially damaged. In Basrur, the house of Udaya Achari too is partially damaged. In Gulwadi village, the well in the house of Aminabi has collapsed owing to the heavy rain the area. The heavy rain in the region has made it impossible for children to go to school. In Kandlur village, the house of Jayalakshmi Mogarthy is damaged after a tree fell on it.

Byndoor Tahsildar Kiran Gowraiah said that Maravanthe is out of danger. Measures are taken to put boulders along the sea coast in case of emergencies. A house of one Subbi Mogarthy in Dombihalli village in Paduvari is completely damaged. The loss has been estimated at around Rs 1.4 lakh. In Shiroor, the house belonging to Sharada Rama is damaged, he added.

In Kasaba village of Karkala, the house belonging to Vishwanath Moily is damaged as the tree fell on it. The taluk experienced heavy wind during the evening hours on Wednesday.
