Jaisalmer sizzles at 43C; rain lashes UP

In Bihar, heavy rain claims 60 lives in 48 hrs

Hot and humid weather conditions prevailed in several parts of the country on Thursday with Jaisalmer scorching at 43 degrees Celsius even as rain lashed Uttar Pradesh.

In Rajasthan, Barmer recorded a high of 42.8 degrees Celsius followed by Bikaner and Churu posting 42.5 degrees Celsius each. Jaipur, Sriganganagar and Ajmer recorded 37.9, 37.5 and 37.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Rainfall of 11 cm occurred in parts of Ajmer bringing some respite from heat in that region, the MeT office there said.

It was sultry day in the national capital also with a high of 37.4 degrees Celsius while the humidity reached up to 79%.

In Punjab and Haryana, Hisar was the hottest at 41.5 degrees Celsius while capital Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees Celsius, the MeT Department there said.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a maximum of 37.5 degrees Celsius while mercury in Karnal settled at 37 degrees Celsius, it said.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius. In Ludhiana and Patiala, mercury settled at 35.6 and 36.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Odisha, too, reeled under humid weather condition with its coastal region recording a humidity level above 90%.

Malkanaganj was hottest at 39.6 degrees Celsius with a humidity level of 94%, followed by Bhawanipatna, Titlagarh, Talcher, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar at 38.5, 38, 37.5, 37 and 35.9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In Bihar, two days after heavy rainfall claimed nearly 60 lives, the weather was hot and humid. Patna was the hottest place in the state with a high of 36.5 degrees Celsius while Gaya recorded 36.3 degrees Celsius, the MeT Department there said.
Bhagalpur and Purnea registered maximum temperature of 36 and 35.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, rain lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh leading to rise in water level of major rivers in the state.

According to Central Water Commission, rainfall recorded in Kanpur was 28.2 mm, Raebareli 40.8mm, Mirzapur 27.2 mm, Auraiya 33.6 mm and Kalpi 36 mm due to which water levels in rivers have started rising.

While the water level of Ganga is rising in Kanpur, Dalmau (Raebareli), Varanasi and Shahjahanpur, that of Yamuna is rising in Agra, Auraiya, Kalpi and Hamirpur. The water level of Gomti is rising in Neemsar and Jaunpur and Sharda is flowing above danger mark in Palliakalan (Kheri).

Similarly, the water level in Ghagra river is rising in Elgin Bridge (Barbanki) and Ayodhya (Faizabad).
