In just three hours, the city on Wednesday received 5.8 mm rainfall and HAL airport 7.2 mm.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, the city and HAL airport upto 5.30 pm had recorded rainfall as ‘trace’ (below 0.1mm).

However, the city received 5.8 mm and HAL received 7.2 mm rainfall by 8.30 pm. Kempegowda International airport recorded 5.2 mm rainfall upto 5.30 pm and Yelahanaka station 19.6 mm.

BBMP call centre staff said that there were no complaints received from the public till 9.30 except water stagnation beneath the Rammurthynagar flyover.

IMD officials state that south west monsoon has covered the whole state and south interior Karnataka and coastal Karnataka are experiencing good rainfall.

The IMD has forecast rain and thunder showers over the city and state for the next 48 hours.

The officials have forecast moderate to heavy rain very likely to occur at most places over all the districts of coastal Karnataka and at many places over Kodagu, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan districts of south interior Karnataka.

Light to moderate rain very likely to occur at many places over all the districts of North Interior Karnataka and over remaining districts of South Interior Karnataka. They have also forecast thunder showers over coastal Karnataka for the next 48 hours.

Chaos on roads
Motorists struggled to make their way through traffic as rains lashed the city.
A traffic police officer, who was monitoring the traffic congestion across the city said, “The rains caused havoc, as traffic congestion was witnessed in the central business district area, Mehkri Circle, Ballari Road, Hebbal, Outer Ring Road near Marathahalli, Bellandur, Electronics City, Madiwala junction, Vijayanagar, Magadi Road, Nagarbhavi, Race Course Road, Seshadripuram and surrounding areas.”

“Apart from rain, the other reason for traffic congestion are bad roads. There are several potholes and no proper outlet for water to drain out. All this leads to stagnation of water on the road, affecting traffic. Also, vehicles get stuck in water-logged areas and break down causing even more traffic snarls. Traffic was paralysed at the Tin Factory junction near KR Puram for more than an hour due to water logging,” added the officer.
