Sena turns 50 today

Last Updated 18 June 2016, 19:01 IST

The Shiv Sena, which has been a major political force in Maharashtra taking up the cause of Marathi manoos and Hindutva, turns 50 on Sunday.

Founded by late Balasaheb Thackeray, the party today is the oldest ally of BJP. It is a part of the NDA coalition led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and jointly runs the saffron alliance government in Maharashtra.

The Shiv Sena — inspired from great Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj — today has emerged as a dominant player. To commemorate the occasion, a series of events have been planned, which includes a function where Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray will address the gathering.

Ahead of the crucial 2017 municipal elections, the relations between the Shiv Sena and BJP are not at its very best.
