Magical fable of fortitude

Dhanak
Hindi (U) Cast: Hetal Gadda, Krrish Chhabria, Vipin Sharma, Gulfam Khan, Vibha Chibber, Flora Saini, Bharti Achrekar, Suresh Menon
Director: Nagesh Kukunoor

From Hyderabad Blues to Dhanak, director Nagesh Kukunoor has come a long way. Dhanak is a marvel.

Shot amidst the sun-kissed desert of Rajasthan and its vibrant villages — in resplendant colours by Chirantan Das — Dhanak is a charming rainbow of a roadie.

Enchantingly enacted by Hetal Gadda and Krrish Chhabria, it’s is a touching tale which children and adults will enjoy alike.

Blind, but brash, the ever ravenously hungry Chotu (who gorges on chapati, chocolates, and sweet meats) is the brother of Pari, politeness and poise personified. Pari’s wish is to see Chotu regain his sight before turning nine. While Chotu is a fan of Salman Khan, easily offended by any rival to his screen hero, Pari’s loyalties lie with Shah Rukh Khan. This leads to friendly ripostes, repartees between brother and sister but never breaking their strong filial bond. Learning Shah Rukh Khan is visiting Jaisalmer for shooting, Pari undertakes to lug Chotu to seek his help in restoring her brother’s sight.

If Hetal and Krrish are endearing as Pari and Chotu, Kukunoor’s canny craftsmanship in narrating an Aesopian-like drama with painterly Rajasthan as canvas, leaves you bewitched.
