Shikha given top billing at Junior badminton meet

Air India’s Chirag Sen and Karnataka’s Shikha Gautam have been given the top billing in the U-19 boys’ and girls categories’ respectively in the All India junior-ranking badminton tournament, which gets underway here at the K Raheja Badminton Stadium from Tuesday.

The tournament will feature singles, doubles and mixed doubles (only U-19) events in the U-17 and U-19 categories.

In the under-19 boys’ singles, Chirag Sen, Mithun Manjunath and Kanishq, and Lakshya Sen are among the top players participating in the competition.

In the under-17 section, Kartikey Gulshan Kumar and Prashi Joshi have been seeded first in the boys’ and girls’ categories. The spotlight will also be on Maisnam Meiraba, the current under-15 national champion.

The qualifying rounds will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday and the main draw begins from Thursday.

The tournament has received over 1750 entries and the overall prize money allotted is Rs three lakh.

The winners in the singles’ categories (boys and girls) of the U-19 section of will walk home with Rs 17,500 .  The corresponding winners in the U-17 section will receive Rs 14,000. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
