The heart of a 24-year-old Bengaluru girl now beats in a 30-year-old man suffering from Acute Heart Failure End Stage (AHF-ES).

The donor had met with a road accident in Bengaluru on June 9. She was admitted to the Apollo Hospital where she was declared brain-dead on Saturday night. The donor’s father decided to donate her organs. The heart transplantation took place at the Narayana Health City.

The recipient was suffering with Acute Heart Failure End Stage (AHF-ES), severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction, according to the doctors treating him. His only option of survival was a heart transplant. The recipient registered himself with the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for organ transplantation in May.

Dr Julius Punnen, senior consultant, Thoracic surgeon and Dr Bagirath Raghuram, senior cardiologist, Narayana Institute of Cardiac Science, Narayana Health City, performed the heart transplant successfully. One of the kidneys has been sent to the JSS Hospitals in Mysuru and another to the Apollo Hospital in Bengaluru. The eyes have been donated to Narayana Nethralaya.

The city traffic police created a green corridor on Sunday morning for the transportation of the live heart from Apollo Hospital on Bannerghatta Main Road to Narayana Hrudayalaya near Bommasandra.
The heart reached the destination in 26 minutes, via Bannerghatta Main Road, Nice Road Junction, Nice Road toll plaza, Hosur Main Road, Chandapura, Narayana Hrudyalaya and finally Bommasandra, covering 24 km.
