HC upholds KAT member's appointment

Last Updated 06 June 2016, 20:27 IST
The High Court on Monday upheld the appointment of G Shantappa as the member judicial of the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT) after the state government submitted that the appointment to KAT is different from that of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

The petitioners had contended that Shantappa had already served as a member of CAT for two terms and that he cannot be appointed member of KAT as it was against the provisions of the Administrative Tribunals Act, 1985. A division bench headed by Chief Justice S K Mukherjee dismissed the petition.

Memo filed
The High Court has the state government to file a memo with regard to the report on rejecting 86,514 applications seeking admission under the RTE Act.

Janaadhikaara Sangharsha Parishath had contended that the Education department had arbitrarily rejected applications of economically weaker sections of society seeking admission under RTE quota.  The  government had informed the court that it would conduct a physical verification of the documents submitted with the rejected applications. A division bench comprising Chief Justice SK Mukherjee and Justice Ravi Malimath adjourned the hearing to Tuesday.
