Mob tortures, blinds student in Assam

A Class IX student was severely beaten, cut by sharp blades and tortured till he turned blind by a mob at Harisinga in Udalguri district of Assam.

Sansuma Ramchiary, a 15-year-old tribal student, suffered all the beating and lost his sight when lime, chilly and salt were pressed on his eyes. Udalguri is a Bodo-dominated district of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).

The incident happened on May 30. Ramchiary went out for a morning walk when he took shelter in front of a closed shop to cover himself from rain. After sometime, he was spotted by some people, who tied him to a post on suspicion of theft. The mob had severely beaten him till the boy fell on his knees. His body was cut with sharp razors and blades, spread lime and chilly powder all over. The beating and torture went on for hours, police sources told DH.

It is said that some police personnel were present at the time of the incident. They didn’t protect him, neither took of his custody.

An FIR (No: 41/36) has been lodged by Praneswar Ramchiary under section 342/325/326 of IPC wherein he has charged that Sri Ratan Das (owner of the shop), Babul Das, Tupa Das, Mukut Das, Anjan Das all from Harisinga town area were involved in the crime.
