A 26-year-old youth averted a possible mishap involving the Ernakulam-Hazzrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express at Panjirel  between Mangaluru Junction and Thokur (Surathkal) station on Wednesday morning.

It all happened when Moses, an elderly man, noticed a broken railway track around 7.45 am while crossing it to reach his property located on the other side of the track, and informed his neighbour Harshith. Harshith rushed to the spot, ran back home, grabbed a red T-shirt and ran towards Mangaluru Jn on the track when he noticed an oncoming train. He waved the T-shirt and the loco pilot stopped the train.

The officials concerned were informed and the gangmen arrived at the spot and clamped the track. Harshith told Deccan Herald he was sleeping when he was woken up and told about the broken track. Sensing trouble, he rushed to the spot and managed to avert an accident.

Southern Railway PRO M K Gopinath said the train was held up for 30 minutes between 8.05 am and 8.35 am.
