Truck driver on phone mows down man in Yeshwantpur

A man died on the spot and an elderly woman suffered injuries after a truck knocked them down on MEA Road in Yeshwantpur on Monday.

The victim was identified as Prakash, 45, a carpenter from Rajagopalnagar. The injured Akkayamma, a resident of RMC Yard, was discharged after being treated as an outpatient at KC General Hospital, said Yeshwantpur traffic police.

The accident occurred at 10.30 am when Prakash was on his way to his workplace, while Akkayamma was following him.

The driver of a sand-laden truck, which was parked on the roadside, suddenly moved the vehicle while talking on his mobile phone, and knocked down Prakash and Akkayamma.

Prakash came under the front wheel of the truck and Akkayyamma fell on the side, said the police.

The two were rushed to KC General Hospital, where Prakash died of his injuries. The driver abandoned the truck and escaped.

The police detained the cleaner, seized the truck and have launched a hunt for the driver.

Biker killed
In a suspected case of hit-and-run, a 45-year-old biker was killed on the elevated flyover at Dasarahalli in Peenya on Monday.

He was identified as Sanjeev Joshi, a resident of Annapurneshwarinagar in Nagarabhavi.

A native of Vijayapura district, he had shifted to Bengaluru about 10 years ago and was working as a supervisor at an industry in Nelamangala, said the Peenya traffic police.

The accident occurred around 11 am when Joshi was on his way to his office. He fell off his bike and was dragged for about 50 metres. Passersby informed the police.

“His condition was very critical and we rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he died around 3 pm. We suspected that it was a case of hit-and-run. The police could not to get any footage from CCTV cameras at the nearby toll collection centre as the cameras were defunct,” said the police.
