Heavy traffic due to funeral procession

The funeral procession of Nirankari Sant Baba Hardev Singh choked several major roads in Delhi throwing traffic out of gear with thousands of devotees pouring on the streets to pay last respects to the departed religious leader on Wednesday.

The funeral procession started from the Nirankari Mission Ashram at Burari at 9 am. Thousands of followers joined the funeral procession as it made its way towards the Nigam Bodh crematorium.

The procession came to Nigambodh Ghat through Mukherjee Nagar, Mall Road and Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT), Kashmere Gate.

It reached the crematorium around 1.40 pm.The Delhi Traffic Police took to twitter to give updates on the procession and issued a traffic advisory urging commuters to avoid certain roads and take alternate routes.

“Traffic has been closed from Kingsway Camp to Burari Road due to heavy pedestrian movement in the procession,” tweeted Delhi Traffic police.

Stretch between Chandgi Ram Akhara to Nigam Bodh Ghat in North Delhi was also closed for motorists due to the procession march, said Delhi Traffic Police.

On the other hand, between Mukarba Chowk AND Libaspur in North West Delhi, motorists witnessed heavy traffic.

Followers from across the country gathered in the city to catch a last glimpse of their guru. Sant Nirankari headed the religio-philanthropic Sant Nirankari Mission.

The 62-year-old Baba died along with his son-in-law in a road accident in Canada on Friday. The mortal remains were brought to Delhi on Monday morning.

The spiritual head of Sant Nirankari Mission was travelling from New York to Montreal in a car along with his two son-in-law Avneet and Sandeep Khinda, when his ill-fated car crashed and two of them (Baba hardev Singh and Navneet) succumbed to their injuries.
