A person died and another one injured when they were hit by a speeding truck in northwest Delhi’s Mahendra Park area on Friday morning.

After the incident, the accused truck driver fled from the spot leaving his vehicle behind. Police have seized the vehicle and a case has been registered.

The incident happened at 6 am when Mewa Ram, 28, a vegetable vendor residing in Jehangirpuri was returning from Azadpur mandi after buying vegetables for his cart.

“As he was walking on the side of the road near a Bharat Petroleum petrol pump on GT Road, a speeding Tata truck came from behind and knocked him down,” said a police officer.

After the accident, the truck driver lost the balance of his vehicle and hit another person few meters ahead from where the first accident had taken place.

“After that he jumped out of the truck and ran away from the spot,” said a police officer.
After some time, a crowd of people gathered around the two victims and a police call was made.

The two injured men were taken to a nearby hospital where Ram was declared brought dead.

Due to the nature of his injuries, the other injured was later referred to AIIMS Trauma centre where his condition is said to be critical.

As the person is still unconscious, police have not been able to know his identity.
“From his clothes and some personal items which we found near him at the accident spot, we are trying to ascertain his identity,” a police officer said.

Police are also trying to know the details of the truck driver through the registration number of the truck.
