Last Updated 27 April 2016, 19:37 IST

Even as the taluk is reeling under acute shortage of drinking water and high incidence of fluoride in the groundwater, miscreants have dropped phorate, a pesticide used to kill pests, insects, mites, leafhoppers among others, into the borewell at Kannughatta in the taluk, and thereby making the water unfit for consumption.

This is for the second time in two months the miscreants are up to this dastardly act. This inhuman act has triggered panic among the people of the parched village.

The villagers have complained that a native breed of cow has died on Wednesday following the consumption of water laced with pesticide. Also, three calves have taken ill after consuming the borewell water, they alleged.

Empty bottles and sachets of urea and the phorate were found at the mouth of the borewell. Foul smell is emanating from the borewell.

Tahsildar Manjunath, Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Kumaraswamy rushed to the spot. The samples of the borewell water have been to lab for testing. Tahsildar Manjunath has instructed Nonavinakere police to trace those involved in the act and take strict action against the culprits.
