Senior writer Kamala Hampana has termed honour killing, for marrying a person outside one’s caste, as a dangerous trend in society.

She added with concern that the incidents of honour killing has made us wonder about the society we are living in.

She was delivering a lecture on ‘Women and Culture’ at divisional-level Mahila Samskriti Utsav organised by the district administration and the Kannada and Culture department at Chikkamagaluru on Saturday.

She also expressed concern over rise in honour killing in the recent years. “Women are subjected to continuous exploitation and assault in society. How can parents kill their kin for marrying or loving a person outside the caste? With the increase in female foeticide, there has been drastic decline in female sex ratio in the society,” she pointed out.

“Women should fight in unity for their rights and identity. There is a need to create awareness among women through education,” she called out.

Umashree, Minister for Kannada and Culture, said that there is a need for change in the mindset of the people. “Women are considered as second-rate citizens in society, but women are equal to men, as they have entered all spheres of life,” she reminded.

MLC Motamma, MLA Srinivas and others spoke during the Utsav.

The minister also flagged off the ‘shaale kade nanna nadige’ drive to bring dropouts back to school portal on the occasion.
