Innocents fall victims to police bullets

“I am a garment factory worker and did participate in the protest, but I never had imagined that my only daughter would end up becoming the victim of the violence.

I am shattered and don’t know what to say,”  a teary eyed Anitha Ningegowda when told Deccan Herald at the Sparsh Hospital where teenage daughter, Preethi Ningegowda, 19, was being treated for a bullet injury on her right thigh.

She was injured during the police firing at protesting garment factory workers at Hebbagodi on Hosur Road near Electronics City. She was returning home around 2 pm when bullet hit her. Preethi studies BCom at BTL First Grade College, Bommasandra.

“She is our daughter and we hail from a poor background. My husband Ningegowda is a helper,” she said while waiting outside the operation theatre. She works with a garment factory at Kudlu Gate.

“I got a bus and I called her up. She told me that she was still walking. Suddenly, she raised an alarm and I asked her the reason. She told me that something strongly hit her right thigh and the call was disconnected,” Preethi’s friend Charulatha said.

Preethi’s brother Anil said doctors demanded Rs 40,000 for the surgery on his sister. “ I have just Rs 2,000 and it is very difficult for me to arrange the funds,’’ he said.

The tale  of Manjunathappa, 44, who suffered  severe bullet injuries on his left chest was no different. He came out of his courier firm office, First Flight, at Bommasandra, to inform his son not to return to the house as the situation was violent, but got injured himself. Manjunath is battling for life his condition is critical. The bullet hit his chest and pierced through his back

He is a resident of Old Chandapura and works as a marketing manager. His son, a second- year PU student, had been to a coaching class. He was hit by the bullet even as he was speaking with his son over the phone.

Manjunath’s colleagues rushed him to the hospital. “ Doctors say that he is critical and are  preparing to conduct a surgery,” his colleague Ramesh said.
