Protest brings Magadi Road to a halt too

Garment workers’ protest on Mysuru Road, Peenya, Jalahalli and Yeshwanthpur caused traffic jams even on Magadi Road and the Outer Ring Road.

The ORR Sumanahalli flyover junction, which is the transit point for travellers bound for Yeshwanthpur, Peenya and Mysuru Road, was a picture of chaos as the police struggled to regulate traffic.

A police officer on duty said that traffic got diverted to Magadi Road as Mysuru and Tumakuru roads were blocked. This led to traffic jam on Sumanahalli flyover. Buses taking short cuts via Jalahalli and Peenya were also stranded on Magadi Road. Office-goers had to alight from their vehicles and walk long distance to reach their workplace. Many were bitter. “Had we been alerted about the traffic scenario, we would have made alternative plans,” said Deepak K, a commuter.

Jeevan M, a salesman, said, “I am stranded in the hot sun for more than an hour now. If I am late to work, I’ll lose my day’s salary.”

Soumya M, a student, said the transport department and the police cared little about public safety on Magadi Road where private bus drivers tended to speed. This traffic jam has made matters worse. Motorcyclists are riding on footpaths and dividers, leaving no space for pedestrians. The traffic police are just mute spectators, she said.
