Vijayakanth joins hands with PWF in Tamil Nadu

Last Updated 23 March 2016, 20:13 IST
Vijaya-kanth’s DMDK in Tamil Nadu entered into an poll alliance with the four-party led People’s Welfare Front (PWF) on Wednesday for the upcoming May 16 Assembly elections.

The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK)’s move is a complete U-turn, as it had asserted that it would go it alone in the May 16 Assembly elections.

As per the actor’s wish to be “King than King maker”, the front also announced Vijayakanth as the chief ministerial candidate for the elections. The DMDK-PWF coalition have finalised the seat-sharing agreement at a meeting held at DMDK headquarters in the city on Wednesday morning. Accordingly, the DMDK would contest 124 of the total 234 Assembly seats, the PWF would fight the remaining 110 seats. “It is a victory alliance”, Vijayakanth said after the his party inked the pact with PWF. Vijakanth’s announcement of joining PWF came as a severe setback especially for the DMK when its chief M Karunanidhi couple of days back said that he was extremely confident that DMDK will be part of the DMK-led front, which also has Congress in its fold.

The new alliance formation has also shattered the hopes of the BJP, which had kept its hopes alive till Tuesday by going all out to rope in the DMDK for the alliance. The PWF, comprising four parties—Vaiko’s MDMK, VCK, CPI and CPM, was formed in November 2015.
