Joyous interest in subjects brought her laurels

'Golden girl' sweeps 6 medals at B'lore Medical College convocation

Limitless interest in the subjects is what put this girl in the pinnacle of glory at the graduation day of BMCRI on Wednesday.

With a gold medal haul of six for the batch of 2010-2016, Dr Vishwa Bharathi stood out from the rest. Her interest made Dr Vishwa Bharathi read her subjects again and again. So, she did not have to put extra efforts to study.

The best outgoing student of MBBS bagged medals for being the overall topper in the first year, 2nd year topper for Forensic Science, final year topper in General Medicine, OBG, overall topper in the final year and the best outgoing topper female.

Having studied her first year PUC from MES College in Bengaluru, she moved to Alva’s College in Mangaluru to complete her second PU.

“I went there for a vacation course. I liked their training so much that I decided to complete my course there. That was indeed a turning point in my life,” she said, speaking on the sidelines of the event.

This topper is hopeful that she would be able to get an admission in the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (Nimhans), Bengaluru, to pursue DM in Neurology. “Research in Neurology is my priority,” she said.

Loud cheers and applause greeted when Dr Mohammed Nadeem came to receive his medal and certificate. He won a gold medal in General Surgery. A student from Arsikere town in Hassan district, he said he remained focussed on what he wanted to do throughout.

“Surgery is a subject that is close to my heart. I learnt it with great interest. The day I entered the college, I had it in my mind that I should walk out with a medal,” he said.
Dr Sandesh Dinesh had a task in hand. He had to manage his studies and also represent his college in several sports tournaments.

Having done that successfully, he was given a medal for being the best sportsperson of the batch. Passionate about basketball, he represented the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in several inter-collegiate tournaments and spent about an hour every day playing the sport.

Other medalists

Among the other gold medalists were Dr Madhusudan N, Dr Neerja, Dr Siddarth, Dr Anjali Chandrashekaran, Dr Sowmyashree, Dr Rashmi K N, Dr Sahana P, Dr Neha Dohare, Dr Sharda, Dr Syed Ahmed and Dr Manjunath Negigouda.

Dr P K Devdas, Dean and Director, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), who spoke about projects that are in the pipeline, said that construction was on to accommodate departments of Radiotherapy, Dermatology, Pathology and Microbiology.
He said that a one-point centre at Victoria Hospital to help victims of sexual assault by providing them all professional help under one roof had been planned on the lines of the existing one in Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

Padma awardee Dr V Shanta - chairperson of the Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai - who was the chief guest, was of the opinion that the care-giving concept was fast disappearing. She said that there was a need to focus on preventive medicine in the UG and PG courses and bring back the system of family practitioners.
