Kollegal town police arrested five persons for allegedly ferrying animals during Siddappaji fair at Chikkallur for sacrifice, on Saturday.

The police have seized five goods autorickshaws, two private buses and a tempo in connection with the incident. Cases have been registered against Mahesh, a resident of Malluru, Puttaswamy of Wadiyarapalya, Rajesh of Terakanambi, Doddamole Nanjunda and Nagamallu of Bomlapura under Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act.

Due to lack of awareness on ban on animal sacrifice, a majority of devotees had brought animals. “The administration should have had informed us earlier. Officials have hurt our religious sentiments, without bringing it to our notice,” devotees said and urged the police not to book cases against them and to release the seized vehicles.
