Maiden M'luru Press Club award conferred on Radhika

Superintendent of Police Dr S D Sharanappa called upon citizens, politicians and media persons to help the district regain its glory.

“Dakshina Kannada is becoming famous for wrong reasons,” he said while speaking at the inauguration of the Mangaluru Press Club Day celebrations and award function organised at Urwa Church Hall here recently.

Sharanappa said, “The district was known for harmony a few years ago. However, the brotherly nature of the local social condition is at stake due to certain untoward incidents of late. It is not impossible to reconstruct the atmosphere of communal harmony if the members of every section of the society join hands with one another.”

“Mangaluru has won accolades in many fields at the global level. The greatness, however, cannot be experienced as the city has been converted into a sensitive place. When the people of India could fight against foreigners to gain freedom, it should not be an impossible task for the local residents  to remove a taint that has been given by a few people. The endeavour, however, will become a reality only when one considers the society and the country to be greater than the individual.”

The district police chief said media is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy. “Media is now powerful than ever before and hence, there is a need to exercise caution to keep it from being used as a negative force. Instead, the media should be utilised as a tool for the development of the country,” he observed.
