10 killed in accidents at Khanapur, Ankola

Ten people including four of a family were killed in two separate accidents in Belagavi and Uttara Kannada districts on Tuesday.

Three people died on the spot and three suffered serious injuries after the car they were travelling by rammed into a tree near Burunki village at Khanapur taluk in Belagavi district on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Mahesh Chandrakant Angadi (36), a resident of Sundholi village in Gokak, Basavaraj Magdum (42) and Sadanand Hiremath (40), also residents of Gokak. The injured Anand Gotadki, Srikant Dangur and Shivmurthy Mathad are receiving treatment at a private hospital in Belagavi.

According to the police, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, when the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a roadside tree. Mahesh Angadi, along with his friends, were returning to Gokak after a pilgrimage to Dharmasthala, Udupi, Gokarna and other places. The impact of the collision was so high that it left the car in a shambles.  Nandgad police have registered a case.

As many as seven persons, including four of a family, were killed in an accident near Belase village of Ankola Taluk in Uttara Kannada district.

According to the police, the accident occurred when the multiutility vehicle (MUV) by which the victims were travelling  in, rammed into a tipper lorry. The lorry was coming from the opposite direction.

The deceased have been identified as Hanumanthappa Durgappa Banakara (64), Kallavva Hanumanthappa Banakara (58), Fakkiresha Banakara (18) and Hanumanthappa Halappa Banakara (38), all residents of Kurugunda village in Haveri district.

A couple Shahjansab (70) and his wife Abida Bi, and Kubera Sajjana Shettara (35),  the driver of the multiutility vehicle . The Banakara family had been to a hospital near Karwar for the treatment of Hanumanthappa, who had a paralytic stroke, and was returning home. The movement of vehicles was affected for sometime on the busy National Highwayafter the accident.
