Crediting Congress MP Veerappa Moily with creating an opportunity to scores of students from backward communities to enter the engineering and medical streams in the State, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hailed him as the “pioneer” of the common entrance test for professional courses.

He was addressing a gathering after felicitating Moily, who has been conferred the Saraswati Samman 2014 for his poetry work Ramayana Mahanveshanam, on Wednesday.

Siddaramaiah said only those who had a proper understanding of history could create history. This had been done by Moily, he said.

He said Moily, through this prestigious award, had brought pride and honour to Kannada language and to the people of the State. Despite hailing from a humble background, Moily had reached great heights both politically and in the literary field, having penned nearly 27 works.

Earlier, Moily said he had taken 10 years to complete Ramayana Mahanveshanam, which involved five years of research and five years of writing. He credited his wife Malati with helping him compose and edit the poem. He said that over the years, the Indian society had grown “insensitive”. Sensitivity could be restored only through literature, he added.
