Two boys drown while immersing Ganesha idol

Two boys drowned while immersing an Ganesha idol in the Margondahalli lake in Vishwanathapura, Bengaluru Rural district, on Saturday evening.

According to police, the deceased have been identified as Chandan, 14, a class nine student and a native of Bhadravathi and Dinesh, a class 10 student and a native of Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu. They were students of Acharya Rakum residential school in Margondahalli.

On Saturday, around 3.30 pm, they took the idol from the school for immersion in the lake. As they reached the lake, the idol was carried by a few elderly persons. While they were immersing the idol, Chandan and Dinesh too went into the water, police said.

The students went a little ahead and helped in carrying the idol. They started drowning and the elder persons tried to rescue them, but in vain. They alerted the police and other local people, but they too could not rescue the students, police said.

The police informed the Fire and Emergency Service personnel and the bodies were fished out. A case has been registered in the Vishwanathapura police station and investigation is on.
