Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy’s visit to Bingipura landfill on Sunday has not helped much in solving the garbage crisis as heaps of garbage lie uncleared in various parts of the City.

The locals of Bingipura village have not allowed a single truck unload the garbage in the landfill, since Sunday.

The villagers said that until the Palike takes up the development works, no garbage truck will be allowed inside the dumpyard. About 100 trucks are lined up outside the dumpyard.

Doddathogur Gram Panchayat president Anil Kumar said the Palike has assured the panchayat of road development works, laying of sanitary pipelines and setting up of water purification units. He added mud-capping has been taken up on Monday morning but the locals will allow trucks to enter the village only after the civic works starts.

Sundaresh, one of the villagers, said that an abandoned quarry has been turned into the dumpyard. The quarry pit is being filled with tonnes of waste for the past three years.
“The Palike had earlier promised  that it would cap one truck load of garbage with three loads of mud. But this is not being practised. The lakes have been contaminated. So we are depending on private tankers for water,” he added.

Piles of garbage is lying unattended in South Bangalore, Bommanahalli, Padmanabhanagar and BTM Layout constituencies. The story is no different in other constituencies, as well.

“We have segregated the waste and packed it in plastic bags. But the pourakarmikas are not collecting it. The mosquito menace has increased as the garbage is not cleared from streets and houses since four days,” laments Sumathi M, a resident of Krishnappa Garden in CV Raman Nagar.

Similar is the fate of Lakkasandra, Sunkadakatte, Atriguppe, Vijayanagar and other pockets of City. People were seen closing their noses as garbage was piled up on roadsides at RV Road, Dodda Mavalli; near Lions Eye Hospital at JC Road, 3rd Cross and at waste segregation centre near  Diary Circle.

“The stray dog menace has increased due to mounds of garbage lying unattended in our locality. Repeated pleas to the BBMP to clear the garbage have failed to elicit any response, so far. A few residents are dumping the waste on roadsides as they have left with no option,” said Vasanth K Bhatt and Shivshankar, residents of Bapuji Layout, Vijayanagar 2nd Stage.

“It will take two more days to clear the accumulated garbage in the City, specially BBMP South Zone. We cannot send trucks to Bingipura till the villagers allow us to dump the waste at the landfill there. We will divert the garbage to Kammanahalli, Terra Firma and other landfills in the City,”  Palike official told Deccan Herald on the condition of anonymity.
